Gokayama consists of 40 small villages. The 2 villages of Ainokura and Suganuma are registered as World Heritage Sites along with Shirakawago's Ogimachi village in Gifu Prefecture.


 

   In addition to the World Heritage Site, there are several other locations that are nationally designated as Important Cultural Properties.

In order to protect Gokayama's cultural heritage and environment, please abide by the following.
Smoking is prohibited outside of the designated areas.
Avoid entering private properties, including fields and under roof overhangs.
Plants and vegetation should be left undisturbed.
Make way for residents' vehicles passing through.
Avoid visiting in the early morning or after dusk.
Be considerate as you take pictures, making sure not to interrupt any other tourists' experiences.
Take your trash with you when you leave.
